Analog to Digital
In the 20+ years of my involvement in photo and video image creation, I was able to observe and participate in the evolution of the medium. I experienced the joy, challenges, anticipation, mystery, science and alure of analog photography mostly on 35mm color slide film as well as silver emulsion and a touch of large format. The transition to digital film planes and their rapid evolution has been remarkable to witness and ushered in a new era of capabilities and accessibility—the advancement of this technology simply boggles the mind. Only 100 years ago, photography was a novelty, and now everyone carries a camera infinitely more powerful in their pocket. I embrace both formats, but have re-emerged fully into the digital age and am enjoying reuniting with the art of the capturing moments of the world around me.
To me, photography is an expression of timing (and light of course). In both technological eras, I attempt to use the imagery to share scenes in which I’ve found myself as accurately as possible. As I am prone to saying, no image can come close to replacing your own sensorial experience of a moment, but at least still images provide a rare and static reference point in time to reflect on those very magical moments, and that is the value that I find in photography. I am in awe of the world we inhabit and admire the humans that we share this planet with, so I hope to display at least a small sample of the wonder, innocence, magic, and beauty that is constantly manifesting in our experience.
